Mtubatuba man initiates school shoe drive

Celani Memela starts a school shoe campaign to assist needy children in the region.

A morning drive to work inspired Celani Memela to start a school shoe campaign to assist needy children in the region.

The Nzalabantu reserve resident was on his way to work one day when he noticed a young schoolboy walking barefoot.

‘It pained me to see him like that and I decided to buy him shoes. When I saw him next, I stopped the car and handed him the shoes,’ said Memela.

‘Then I began thinking about the many other pupils who are in need. ‘So I went out and bought 10 pairs of shoes, and posted on my Facebook page to share with others.

‘The response was amazing, and that’s how the drive began.

‘ He said he shared his story with the management team at work, and they contributed towards more shoes, thereby growing the programme.

The drive has already assisted pupils from Nhlanzini, Nhlabane, Nzalabantu, Mabhodla, and Manzamandi primary schools in Mtubatuba.
