WATCH: Bystander shot during R34 protest

The R34 was closed for much of Friday morning owing to the protest

A PENSIONER was this morning (Friday) rushed to Ngwelezana Hospital in critical condition after sustaining gunshot wounds during a protest on the R34.

Danger Biyela was allegedly shot in the forehead by police while watching protesters blocking the R34 near the Larsen farm (KwaLaseni).

Angry community members from Ehlanzeni reserve under the Ubuka Tribal Authority in ward 10 blockaded the R34 at the intersection with the D2323, demanding completion of a bridge on the D2323.

According to Nkosinathi Biyela, Danger was standing on the roadside as protesters were busy blocking the road.

‘I drove past them. After driving through, a police van arrived from Melmoth. I made a U-turn and they sped off,’ Biyela said.

Traffic was severely affected and a large number of police officers were at the scene.

Police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase confirmed the shooting and said at this stage it was unclear who was responsible.

‘Our members are still busy at the scene. After everything has been cleared, they will be able to provide us with full information,’ he said.
