WATCH: Empangeni sugar cane fields on fire
This is the third fire in the Empangeni area in less than a week
No one knows yet the cause of the fire that destroyed hectares of sugar cane at an Empangeni farm this afternoon (Thursday).
According to workers at the farm, an electrical spark is thought to be the cause, but this has not been confirmed.
Sduduzo Mchunu, a nearby resident who is a nightshift worker and was asleep when the fire broke out, said he was abruptly awakened by the smell of smoke.
‘I am an asthmatic, and on top of that I have to report for duty tonight and my sleep was cut short by this incident,’ he said.
City of uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue, as well as private water tankers remained on scene monitoring the situation.
