Municipal manager tackles Mtuba waste crisis

Mtubatuba municipality launches cleaning campaign

Mtubatuba municipal manager (MM) Thamisanqa Xulu was on Monday seen getting down and dirty at the overflowing skip bins in KwaMsane.

The bins, located near the shops in KwaMsane, have reportedly not been emptied for almost a month.

Xulu said he took the initiative to be hands-on to ensure waste at KwaMsane is collected despite the refuse collection truck being out of commission owing to a breakdown.

The two skips in question are among several such bins in the township that have been neglected for weeks.

These include one near uMfolozi High School and another close to uMgababa, which has been placed outside a private residence.

The homeowner has complained about how the skip is not collected timeously, and that residents dump all kinds of filth and waste into it.

By Monday morning, waste from this skip was yet to be collected.

Another skip on a street heading to the old municipal graveyard was spotted filled to the brim with uncollected waste, while there was a seemingly mushrooming dump site opposite Sikhulile Creche, and another just behind the municipal offices (the old community hall) next to the shops.

By Saturday morning, three skips at KwaD, a location neighbouring KwaMsane, had not been collected.

Xulu said the municipality was in the process of acquiring another waste removal truck and increasing its vehicle fleet capacity so it can carry out this mandate efficiently.
