Armed robbery, hostage situation at Mandeni supermarket
Four suspects are alleged to be invloved in armed robbery and hostage
IPSS MEDICAL Rescue have been on the scene of an armed robbery at a supermarket in Sundumbili near Mandeni since early this morning (Monday).
It is reported that four suspects accosted the manager and staff members as they arrived at work to open the shop.
The suspects forced the members of staff inside the premises.
Security guards called for backup, and police quickly arrived and surrounded the premises.
Five staff members and one security guard were locked inside the shop’s cold room.
By 7.30am, those who were locked inside the cold room were set free by law enforcement and treated for hypothermia by paramedics on scene.
Saps special task force and K9 unit arrived on scene just before 8am. It’s believed that two members of staff were still being held by the suspects inside the premises.
Just after 9am, shortly after the Saps special task force and K9 units breached the store, a further three members of staff were freed and treated by IPSS paramedics on scene.
As at 9.45am, no arrests had been made, but according to the witnesses, four suspects were inside the store.
