Thousands arrested, contraband confiscated in police operations
The operations aimed at reducing the high levels of crime, particularly contact crimes
Police in KZN arrested a total of 9 169 suspects during various multi-disciplinary operations in March.
The total arrests are broken down as follows: 198 for murder, 157 for attempted murder, 291 for robbery, 259 for rape, 2 033 for assault, 289 for burglary and 1 568 were arrested for drug-related crimes.

Large quantities of drugs including cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, crystal meth and dagga were seized.
Counterfeit goods, including cigarettes, were also seized during the operations.
Stolen property, including 205 vehicles, were recovered by police, while a further 43 vehicles were seized after having been used in the commission of crimes.
Police also seized 282 firearms, including 16 homemade firearms, 237 revolvers, 15 rifles, nine shotguns and five semi-automatic firearms.
A total of 2 897 rounds of ammunition were also seized.
Stolen livestock such as cattle, donkeys, goats and sheep were also recovered by police.
The operations aimed at reducing the high levels of crime, particularly contact crimes.
Certain areas with specific crime threats were targeted for the operations, and were conducted across all 11 districts in KZN.
KZN provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi commended police officers across the province for their commitment in rooting out the criminal element.
‘These results are an indication that criminality will not be tolerated and ordinary citizens are working with police to clean up their neighbourhoods,’ said Mkhwanazi.
