Zululander crowned best bricklayer in Africa

The youngster took gold at the WorldSkills Africa competition

LUNGELWA Mtetwa from KwaMthethwa has cemented his place as the best bricklayer in Africa after taking gold at the WorldSkills Africa competition held in Namibia last week.

Lungelwa (21) is a student at Coastal KZN TVET College – Appelsbosch campus where he is studying level 4 in civil engineering and building construction.

After being given two plans and 16 hours to complete the building of the plans, Lungelwa garnered 71 points, putting him firmly at the top of his category.

Encouraging the youth who are eager to enter the construction field, Lungelwa said, ‘this skill requires a very fine eye and passion. ‘Even if it’s difficult, try harder and push, and most of all love what you do.’

The master bricklayer said he was now looking forward to representing South Africa at the next competition to be held in Shanghai later in the year.

He is determined to start his own construction company or go into teaching after finishing his studies.
In total, Team South Africa walked away with eight medals out of 16 categories contested.
