Boardwalk Inkwazi Runathon promoting athletics, healthy living and community spirit

The Runathon served as a platform to nurture local talent, encourage first-time runners and promote long-term participation in athletics.

The Boardwalk Inkwazi Runathon, proudly hosted by Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre, made its highly anticipated return this year, marking the second edition of what is fast becoming a signature sporting event in the Richards Bay calendar.

Launched in 2024 with a 10km race and 1-mile heats, the event grew even more exciting in 2025 with the introduction of a 5km fun run, designed to encourage participation from all ages and fitness levels.

The response was overwhelming. With an exceptional turnout from competitive athletes, recreational runners, families and fitness enthusiasts the Runathon brought the Richards Bay community together in a vibrant display of energy, unity, and determination.

At the heart of this initiative is Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre’s commitment to promoting athletics in the community — not only by providing a professional and inclusive event but by fostering a culture of healthy living, goal setting and active lifestyles. The centre believes in the power of sport to uplift communities, inspire youth and create meaningful connections.

To ensure the event met national standards, Boardwalk Inkwazi partnered for the second year with Richards Bay Athletics Club, whose experience in athletics events proved invaluable. Their assistance in route planning, race logistics and technical execution played a key role in the event’s seamless coordination, competitive integrity and success.  It was an honour to work alongside a team so dedicated to the sport and our community.

Beyond the race, the Runathon served as a platform to nurture local talent, encourage first-time runners and promote long-term participation in athletics. It provided many with their first experience of a structured race environment and showcased the positive impact sport can have on personal well-being and community morale.

This year’s event would not have been as successful without the support of our sponsors. A heartfelt thank you goes to:

aQuellé, Food Lovers Market, Pick n Pay, Bluff Meat Supply, Vodacom Shop, Panarottis, Spur, RocoMamas, Edgars Beauty, John Dory’s, Gold Rush, Virgin Active, Jonsson Workwear, Rollergirl Marketing.

The event also received a lively boost from ECR’s DJ Zisto, who hosted her popular breakfast show live from the centre between 6am and 10am. Her presence on the day, along with three weeks of promotional support from East Coast Radio, helped amplify excitement and draw participants from across the region.

The Boardwalk Inkwazi Runathon is more than a race — it’s a movement. A celebration of health, athleticism, and community spirit. As the host, Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre remains committed to growing this event and continuing to champion athletics in Richards Bay for years to come.
