RBIDZ celebrates milestones and charts future growth
The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone continues to distinguish itself as an important growth engine for KZN
The Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) recently brought together its Board of Directors, executives and employees for a strategic engagement aimed at reflecting on the organisation’s performance, celebrating key achievements and reinforcing its vision for future growth.
Hosted by RBIDZ Chief Executive Officer, Mr Thabane Zulu, the engagement served as an important platform to take stock of operational matters, share recent developments and acknowledge the collective efforts that continue to position the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) as a leading driver of industrialisation and investment in KZN.

Addressing employees, Zulu emphasised the importance of maintaining a high-performance culture and ensuring all staff remain aligned to the organisation’s strategic objectives. He commended employees for their dedication and resilience, highlighting that RBIDZ’s recent achievements were the result of a collective commitment to excellence.
Among the milestones celebrated was RBIDZ’s recognition at the recent Special Economic Zones Conference held in Durban, where the organisation received the Best Investment of the Year Award from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC). The prestigious accolade was presented by Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, in recognition of the organisation’s impressive contribution towards attracting and facilitating investment.
The award marked another significant achievement for the organisation, reinforcing its growing reputation as a catalyst for economic development and investment growth within the province and beyond.
The celebratory mood was further strengthened by another major accomplishment announced by RBIDZ CFO, Ms Simangele Mvelase. RBIDZ recently recorded a Clean Audit outcome for the seventh consecutive year, a feat that underscores the organisation’s unwavering commitment to sound financial management, good governance, accountability and robust institutional systems.

For many in attendance, the achievement represented more than just a positive audit outcome, it reflected years of dedication, discipline and a culture of excellence that has become synonymous with the organisation.
RBIDZ Board Chairperson, Advocate Bheki Mbili, praised employees across all levels of the organisation for their contribution towards maintaining the entity’s strong governance record.
“This achievement is truly remarkable and should make all of us proud,” said Mbili. “It demonstrates the commitment, discipline and dedication that employees continue to display in strengthening organisational performance. Every employee has played a role in this success, and it is through our collective efforts that RBIDZ continues to deliver on its mandate.”
Mbili noted that the Board continues to receive positive recognition from the KZN Government and stakeholders regarding the organisation’s achievements and the role it plays in advancing the province’s economic development agenda.
“The RBIDZ continues to distinguish itself as an important growth engine for KZN,” he said. “We must continue building on these achievements, accelerate strategic projects and ensure the investments facilitated through the RBIDZ translate into meaningful economic opportunities and lasting benefits for our communities.”

While organisational performance and governance achievements took centre stage, the engagement also provided an opportunity to recognise long-serving employees who are also part of the people whose contributions have shaped the organisation’s success over the years.
In a special recognition ceremony, Corporate Services Executive Manager, Ms Nombuso Nsele, presented Long Service Awards to employees who have dedicated five, ten and fifteen years of service to the organisation.
The awards recognised individuals whose commitment, expertise and institutional knowledge have contributed significantly to the RBIDZ’s growth and achievements. The moment served as a reminder that behind every milestone achieved by the organisation are employees whose passion and dedication continue to drive its success.

As the event concluded, a strong sense of pride and optimism was evident among attendees. The combination of national recognition, a seventh consecutive Clean Audit and the acknowledgement of long-serving employees painted a picture of an organisation firmly rooted in excellence, accountability and people-centred leadership.
The strategic engagement ultimately reaffirmed RBIDZ’s commitment to sustaining its momentum, strengthening collaboration across the organisation, and continuing to deliver on its mandate of driving investment, industrial development and economic growth for KZN and South Africa.
