WATCH: John Ross highway traffic mayhem

Many motorists use off-road tactics to beat traffic, ultimately causing more congestion

MORNING and afternoon rush-hour on the John Ross Highway, Empangeni-bound, has become a nightmare for road users owing to non-functioning traffic lights.

Motorists are using ‘alternate routes’ such as pavements and grass paths to beat the traffic, causing more congestion when rejoining the road.

To remain safe, here are quick tips to exercise during peak hour.

• Plan your trips ahead – leave 15 minutes prior to give yourself extra time

• Exercise patience – do not be the cause of frustration for other drivers and road users

• Avoid swerving from lane to lane and using off-road routes as this decreases the chance of causing accidents

• Always be aware of possible alternative roads/routes to your destination

• Apply the brakes smoothly by stopping and starting your car without jerky motions so you’ll avoid knocking into bumpers, and help traffic flow.
