AGGRIEVED Mhlathuze Water employees downed tools at Nzesi and Jozini water treatment plants earlier today (Friday).
Speaking anonymously, one employee said they were protesting because the employer had not implemented the commissioner’s decision, passed in 2019, that entitled them to a R3 300 housing allowance.

“We have been asking the employer to give us the money as per the commissioner’s decision and they have been telling us we should wait for the board’s decision on this matter,” she said.
Moreover, she said they want their money to be backpaid starting from the 2019 financial year.
“There will be no service provider or any other persons allowed to enter [the plant], and we are adamant not to surrender in our action,” said the employee.
The City of uMhlathuze announced that parts of Empangeni would be without water for an unknown duration, owing to the strike action.
However, the municipality was not clear on which exact areas would be affected.
