How to apply for a free driver’s licence

3 000 KZN residents will be issued with free licences

After last week’s announcement that 3 000 KZN residents would get free driver’s licences, clarity has been given on the application process.

The Department of Transport (DoT) launched its Thuthuka Skills Development Programme to assist young people in obtaining driver’s licences at no cost.

However, (Zululand 1 Region) Ubumbano Driving Schools Owners’ Association regional spokesperson Mphakamiseni Mthethwa said applicants must not approach driving school offices.

“They can get application forms from the Department of Transport regional offices or apply online on the department’s website, with the closing date on Tuesday, 17 October,” he said.

“The department is running the recruitment – driving schools do not have the power to be part of the selections.

“After the recruitment process, the department will interact with our provincial structure to assist in the allocation of beneficiaries to relevant driving school associations.”

Mthethwa further clarified that not all driving schools would be part of the programme.

“Only driving schools with yellow certificates acquired in 2018 or before will benefit from this project,” he explained.

“The government has to check whether or not the driving school has an office, enough vehicles and qualified instructors.”

Who can apply?

• KZN residents
• Those with no criminal records
• Those with basic literacy skills
