Education MEC Mbali Frazer yesterday advised teachers, parents and caregivers to use their discretion on whether or not school should go ahead during the inclement weather.
This as the SA Weather Service (SAWS) yesterday issued a level 6 warning for disruptive rains for King Cetshwayo and uMkhanyakude districts, in place from 1am to 5pm today, and into tomorrow.
KwaMbonambi Primary said parents were informed that learners should stay at home until the weather clears.
Ikusasalethu High School in Mtubatuba took the same route, informing parents that classes would be suspended.
Departmental guidelines on weather-related school closures:
• In a situation of such weather conditions, school principals must always communicate with parents and learners
• If weather conditions are unfavourable, the principal must inform parents to keep their children at home
• If the bad weather starts when learners are already at school, the principal must observe the conditions and decide whether to keep learners at school or send them home
• Any damage to school infrastructure must immediately be reported to the DoE
• The principal must develop catch-up plans to ensure learners do not fall behind on the curriculum.
