WATCH: Local relief efforts to support Tongaat storm victims
Homes destroyed by what is reported to be a 'tornado-like event' in Tongaat as destructive storm hits parts of KZN

With homes destroyed and many displaced following Monday’s destructive storm in Tongaat, efforts are under way to gather much-needed donations to assist affected families.
A number of homes were destroyed by what is reported to be a ‘tornado-like event’, which swept through the area yesterday (Monday) evening.

Round Table 200 Richards Bay has called on local communities to band together in support of those affected and is pleading for donations, whether monetary or essential items like non-perishable food, blankets and clothing.

“Numerous homes have collapsed resulting in injuries, including minors seeking refuge from the storm. Additionally, several vehicles have been damaged, adding to the severity of the situation.
“As a result, many of the injured have been transported to medical facilities for urgent care,” said Round Table.

Shalom Lighthouse Empangeni is also urging residents in and around Empangeni to assist with collecting items – blankets, clothes and non-perishable foods – for disaster relief.
“Please make a collection, and items can be picked up or dropped off at Shalom Lighthouse Empangeni before Friday. All contributions will be handed over to the Haven Of Rest in Tongaat,” said the church.
