Local government needed for national success

Revitalising dysfunctional municipalities and improving service delivery should be President Cyril Ramaphosa’s focus at the opening of Parliament tomorrow.

This was the view of the South African Local Government Association (Salga) president, Cllr Bheke Stofile.

Stofile will lead the local government delegation, including the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) participating in the parliamentary debate on behalf of local government.

“Many of our municipalities face significant challenges, compromising the delivery of essential services to our communities. These challenges exist both within and outside of municipal controlled internal environments,” said Stofile.

“The [election] results have led to the formation of a government of national unity, demonstrating our commitment to collaboration and collective progress.

“Recognising the pivotal role of local government in development is paramount for our nation’s progress. Therefore, the agenda of the seventh Parliament should place particular emphasis on the vital role of co-operative governance as a cornerstone of our government structure.”
