British holidaymaker drowns at Cape Vidal

A British citizen’s holiday took a fatal turn over the weekend when he sadly drowned at Cape Vidal.

According to Mtubatuba SAPS spokesperson Captain Justice Hlabisa, the man (47) was declared deceased on scene.

“Police were alerted to the drowning at about 2pm on Sunday and attended the scene. The NSRI had already retrieved the body,” said Hlabisa, adding that an inquest docket has been opened.

The NSRI said their St Lucia base was notified of the drowning in progress by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers.

“An NSRI rescue vehicle carrying rescue swimmers and towing the rescue craft responded and joined Ezemvelo rangers on the scene,” said NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

“The British tourist was recovered from the surf zone by NSRI rescue swimmers. Sadly, the man was found to be deceased.

“It appears that while on an arranged tour to Cape Vidal Nature Reserve, the man went for a swim at the beach where he was observed to be in difficulties in the surf zone and the alarm was raised,” said Lambinon.

The man’s body was taken to a government mortuary.
