How to update your prepaid electricity meter ahead of Sunday’s deadline

Update your prepaid meter or cough up an amount of up to R12 000 for a replacement, warns Eskom

Residents who fail to update their prepaid electricity meters could incur thousands in costs and be left without power.

This warning was issued by Eskom on Monday, just days before this Sunday’s recoding deadline.

The power utility has warned there will be no extension of the deadline, and customers have until Sunday, 24 November to recode their meters.

If not upgraded from Key Revision Number 1 (KRN1) to KRN2, these meters will no longer accept electricity tokens after the set deadline.

“This means that once your current credit is depleted, you will lose power and the meter will become inoperable, necessitating a meter replacement that could cost up to R12 000, which the customer will have to pay.

“Customers with meters still on KRN1 have likely not purchased electricity for more than six months or might be using unauthorised tokens bought from criminal syndicates,” said Eskom’s group executive for distribution, Monde Bala.

How to recode your meter:
Purchase electricity from an Eskom-approved vendor. The credit token slip will include 3 sets of 20-digit numbers to upload on your meter.
Follow the sequence of the numbers on the slip. If this doesn’t work, follow this sequence:
Step 1: Enter the second set of 20 digits on your slip and wait for them to be accepted.
Step 2: Enter the first 20 digits and wait for them to be accepted.
Step 3: Lastly, enter your sales token.
Your meter should now be recoded to KRN2.
After keying your recode tokens, key in any other tokens you may have received, for example free basic electricity tokens.

How to check your meter:
To verify if your meter is ready:
• Enter 1844 6744 0738 4377 2416 on your meter keypad
• If it shows 1 or 1.2, your meter still needs to be recoded
• If it shows 2 or 2.2, your meter is already updated and requires no further action
