WATCH: 6 Tips to prevent heatstroke this summer

Beat the Zululand heat and enjoy summer safely...

According to the World Health Organisation, any temperature over 40 degrees Celsius is considered a heatwave.

On Monday, parts of the Zululand region sizzled to above this mark, signalling a sweltering start to summer.

Hot weather can lead to serious health risks such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Take note of the signs and how to prevent it from happening.

Heat exhaustion symptoms:

· Nausea and vomiting
· Headaches and dizziness
· Muscle cramps and aches
· Fatigue

Heatstroke symptoms:

· High body temperature
· The absence of sweating, with flushed skin
· Difficulty breathing
· Hallucinations and confusion
· Disorientation and seizure

If these signs are present, a patient must be referred to a medical doctor immediately.

What to do in an emergency

· Move to a cooler place
· Put the person in a cool tub of water
· Sponge the person with cool water
· Place ice packs on the neck and armpits
· Cover the person with cool, damp sheets
· Offer chilled water or a sports drink that contains electrolytes

Tips for keeping cool on hot days:

1. Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water and non-alcoholic liquids
2. Stay indoors in a well-ventilated or air-conditioned room. If your home does not have air conditioning, seek relief in a shopping mall
3. Dress in cool, lightweight clothes and take cool showers or baths
4. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and apply sunblock when outdoors
5. Outside playtime for children should be restricted between 10am and 4pm
6. Never leave a child or pet in a vehicle while you run an errand
