Owners warned about roaming livestock

Mayor raises concerns about the number of accidents attributed to stray animals

A primary concern for newly-elected Pongola Mayor Bhekinkosi Thwala is the number of N2 accidents attributed to stray animals.

This was revealed during a speech given shortly after his inauguration last Tuesday following a special Council meeting where he was elected unopposed.

The mayoral position became vacant almost a year ago following the resignation of former mayor Velephi Sikhosana.

“We have conducted numerous awareness campaigns about the danger posed by stray animals on our roads, and have urged amaKhosi to speak to the people about the issue. “We have also decided to fence some of the major roads to stop animals, and are building a pound to keep those stray animals,” explained Thwala, adding that livestock owners will be fined R150 per animal according to the by-laws.

“We understand our people do not have money as some of them are not working, but we are doing this to encourage them to look after their animals. If they do not adhere to our call to remove their animals from our roads, we will increase the fine.”

Thwala says his municipality will also continue business inspections, especially at spaza shops.

“About 17 learners from Simunye Primary School were recently rushed to hospital after reportedly eating chips they bought from the local tuckshop.

“The following day, we embarked on an inspection campaign with police to check the validity of the foodstuffs. We are going to extend this inspection to other wards to ensure our community, especially children, are safe,” he said.

Thwala said he would also prioritise title deeds for Ncontshana township residents, upskilling local youth, and rehabilitating roads.
