Water is safe for human consumption, says City of uMhlathuze

Municipality warns against spreading misinformation amid 'poisoned water' claims on social media

The City of uMhlathuze has urged residents to rely only on credible sources of information regarding municipal services, including water supply and quality.

This after last week’s ‘misinformation’ shared on social media regarding the alleged poisoning of the water supply at Cubhu Lake in Madlankala.

According to acting municipal manager Phakama Mhlongo, the city’s water treatment process is rigorously monitored and tested regularly to ensure compliance with the South African National Standards (SANS) for drinking water.

In a statement issued today (Thursday), Mhlongo said the city’s Scientific Services department has confirmed that the water is safe for consumption after thorough investigations were conducted, and sample testing was completed at the eSikhaleni Water Treatment Plant, resulting in determinants being within set limits as per SANS.

“Residents can be assured that the city’s water treatment plants are equipped with advanced technology and skilled personnel to detect and respond to any potential water quality issue.

“Furthermore, the city has not received any reports or complaints from residents, hospitals or other stakeholders regarding water-borne illnesses or poisoning,” said Mhlongo.

“We therefore dismiss these allegations as false as the water we supply to all our municipal customers remains safe for human consumption and is tested by the highest drinking water quality standards,” added Mhlongo.

Mhlongo further warned against the spread of misinformation, which can cause unnecessary panic and harm to the community.
