Zululand Hospice lights up the night

Zululand Hospice’s Tree of Light ceremony honoured departed loved ones and raised support for palliative care

For more than 30 years, the Zululand Hospice Association (ZHA) has brought the community together with its annual Tree of Light ceremony.

Last Thursday evening, the tradition continued as the Tree of Light illuminated the Zululand Observer grounds in Empangeni.

Everyone lit their candles and gathered around the tree as it brightened the night, offering prayers to all the loved ones lost.

ZHA GM Christine Samuel thanked everyone for their continued support, especially donations to the charity shop and for pledging R100 per month.

At ZHA, their average is caring for 102 patients monthly at R1 750 per month per patient.

The ZHA provided 13 805 interventions to patients and families from April 2023 to March 2024 and conducted 3 377 home care visits.

“If we didn’t have Hospice, it would be a sad day in Zululand indeed, because none of us know when exactly we will need them,” said Louise Brockman, a friend of Hospice.

Hospice needs volunteers for their shop and events.
