Woman and child held at gunpoint during house robbery

Police investigation under way after a woman and child were robbed at gunpoint

A woman and a child (10) were held at gunpoint during a house robbery in Qakwini, Mtubatuba last week, during which valuables were stolen by the unknown suspects.

On Thursday, at around 9.30pm, the woman (52), while watching TV with the child and on a call, heard a noise at her door, as if people were breaking through it and the burglar guard.

The woman informed the person she was on the call with that she was shaken by the alarming noise. As she dropped the call, four unknown suspects, one armed with a firearm and the other three with knives, entered the house.

The suspects reportedly threatened the woman and child and demanded money, to which she responded by saying she did not have any.

It is alleged that the suspect bearing the firearm hit the woman on her forehead with the butt of the gun, and she fell down.

The suspects reportedly searched the house and found R900, and thereafter took the woman and child to a rondavel in the yard on the homestead.

On the way to the rondavel, the woman noticed four other unknown suspects in the yard.

Once in the rondavel, the suspects searched it, looking for valuables they could steal but found nothing.

According to the police, the suspects stole belongings valued at just over R3 000, including cellphones, and stole bank cards and IDs.

Police spokesperson Captain Justice Hlabisa said no arrests have yet been made, and that investigations are ongoing. He added that the woman was taken to a nearby clinic for a medical examination.
