Ever been driving on a long-distance road trip, or even your daily commute, and wondered what those small blue signs with seemingly random letters and numbers at the roadside mean?

Look no further because here is the explanation you’ve been waiting for.

They are spaced 200 metres apart on all the major highways around South Africa, and are there in case of emergency.

Should you experience vehicle failure or any other emergency, you can contact the emergency services and tell them exactly where you are located.

In this case, ‘N3’ is the freeway on which you are travelling; ‘-6’ is a section of the road; ‘25.6’ is the number of kilometres you have travelled from the previous town, and the ‘N’ stands for ‘north’, being the direction in which you are travelling.
