SPCA relief after calmer New Year

SPCA reports lower than expected numbers of stray or injured animals on New Year's eve

Despite the prevalence of fireworks in Richards Bay on New Year’s Eve, the SPCA reported lower than expected numbers of stray or injured animals that came through their gates.

Two Pekingese dogs and one Jack Russell reportedly escaped after being frightened by fireworks, with one of the Pekingese fatally injured, suspected to have been hit by a vehicle.

The other two dogs were reunited with their owners.

Four stray dogs and six cats were admitted to the SPCA, as well as an injured dove.

One dog reportedly died in Meerensee after escaping from its yard and running into the bushes owing to the fireworks.

SPCA inspectors did not tend to this case, so cannot confirm the cause of death, but were informed by a resident.

Empangeni SPCA reported a similar experience, with three stray dogs picked up and another 10 or so running frantically in the streets on New Year’s Eve.

The latter, however, could not be picked up as the inspector could not get close to them.

There were reports of a dog stuck in burglar guards, which was assisted by the CPF. No serious injuries were reported to the SPCA.

Empangeni SPCA received reports of people looking for two cats and five dogs, however, these were not the animals taken in by the organisation.

The SPCA offered discounted boarding for New Year’s, at a rate of R50 to help keep people’s animals safe, however, no one took them up on this offer.
