Mass power outage as storm hits KZN

Several areas are without electricity owing to damaged infrastructure caused by stormy weather across KZN

Several parts of KZN are without power owing to thunderstorms and disruptive rains that have caused damage to electricity infrastructure.

Eskom reported on Monday that technicians are working across the province to restore supply to several areas including Empangeni, Hluhluwe, Ulundi and Nkandla.

“The process may take longer than usual due to the high volume of outages and adverse weather conditions.

“The public is urged to avoid any fallen cables or structures or damaged infrastructure, and to report hazardous situations to the local authorities,” the power utility stated.

Disaster management teams remain on high alert as heavy rains are set to persist across KZN today (Monday) until Wednesday.

This as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned of disruptive rains with scattered showers and thundershowers expected over the central and eastern regions.

“The expected persistent rainfall, with associated risks, emphasises the need for caution and preparedness among all road users and the public.

“Road flooding, slippery surfaces, and broad flash flooding are possible. The use of vehicle headlights, while driving at a reasonably low speed, will be useful during showery conditions,” SAWS said.

“Motorists should ensure clear windscreens, as traffic and road markings could be difficult to see during the occurrence of heavy rain, even for vehicles with properly working wipers, in some instances.

“Further, it is inevitable that some low-lying bridges could overflow, with powerful currents that could sweep away vehicles and lead to loss of life and property. It is strongly advised that motorists do not enter flooded low-lying bridges or roads.”
