To help make the most of your parkrun experience this season, here are six essential tips to keep you cool, comfortable and ready to enjoy your summer strides.
1. Dress to stay cool and protected
Wearing the right clothing is essential to stay comfortable and protected from the sun while walking, jogging, running, or volunteering.
Choose lightweight, absorbant fabrics that help draw moisture away from your body, keeping you cool and regulating your temperature.
A sun hat, peak or cap can shield your head and face from direct sunlight, while sunglasses and regularly applied sunscreen will protect you from harmful UV rays.
Don’t forget your parkrun essentials like your barcode or ID band!
2. Stay hydrated
Fuel up wisely before your parkrun with a light, easily digestible meal and opt for foods that deliver the energy you need without weighing you down in the heat.
Hydration is key when parkrunning in warmer weather, so always listen to your body’s signals and drink water when you feel thirsty. Carry a water bottle.
3. Pace yourself and enjoy the journey
Warm weather can make chasing a personal best or completing the course more challenging, so it’s important to listen to your body and adjust your pace.
Consider ‘parkwalking’ instead of pushing too hard, this might even lead to enjoyable conversations with fellow walkers or the tail walker.
If you transition into jogging, aim for a steady, manageable pace, and if you start feeling too hot, slow down or take it easy.
4. Cool down in the shade
After completing your parkrun, scanned your barcode and handed in your finish token, take time to cool down and rehydrate.
Seek out some shade and enjoy a cold drink.
The summer heat might leave you sweating more than usual, so consider packing an extra set of clothes and some deodorant to stay fresh and comfortable as you enjoy the post-parkrun buzz.
5. Beat the heat by volunteering
When the weather feels too hot for walking, jogging, running, or if you are injured, why not explore the many volunteering opportunities at parkrun?
Let your friends and family take part while you help on the sidelines.
6. Share the parkrun spirit and bring a friend
Since the weather is bright and warm, there’s no need to rush off after parkrun.
Stick around after your run to cheer on others, chat with volunteers, or lend a hand with packing up.
It’s a great way to make new community friends, memories and put a smile on someone’s face.
Parkrun is always more fun with friends, so why not spread the joy by inviting someone to join you?
