WATCH: EFF warns of protest action in Richards Bay

Five EFF members appeared at the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on Monday following last week's protest at uMhlathuze Municipality

Five EFF members charged with malicious damage to property at the City of uMhlathuze during protest action on Thursday, appeared at the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court today (Monday), where the matter was postponed until tomorrow.

Damage in excess R300 000, public violence, and the assault on a security guard were among the allegations brought by the City.

Mongezi Twala, Sabelo Khubisa, Simphiwe Ndlela, Simo Gumede and Vusimuzi Cele were remanded in custody after the magistrate recused herself, saying a new magistrate will continue with the matter.

It is understood that the EFF members were protesting over the refusal of the city to allow them to replace three EFF councillors who were expelled from the party in 2023.

Outside the court on Monday, EFF provincial secretary Nokululeko Ngubane gave his full support to the five accused and alerted Alton businesses that members would be mobilising members to protest in that area tomorrow.
