Grocery hamper drive needs support
Richards Bay charity Walk in Faith calls on the community to help support its grocery drive and children's school lunches

Local charity Walk in Faith is in desperate need of grocery supplies, with their food and lunch cupboards running empty as a number of families desperately await help with basic necessities that can last them until payday.
Many of the families in need include pensioners and single-parent homes who are all reliant on Sassa grants as their only income, or some single mothers earning below minimum wage.
Merinda Ackerman of Walk in Faith said there are 219 families with children registered on their database and 465 children. These numbers exclude senior citizens.
As the organisation assists with groceries when available, their daily school lunches programme is ongoing and costs R150 to feed one child per week.
“There are almost 100 children on the school lunches drive. For some youngsters it is their only meal for the day, while others will eat half at school and take the other half home for their siblings,” said Ackerman.
“We rely on donations for our projects and drives, and promote our R100 blessing pledge which helps to provide lunch to at least one child for three days.
“Donations of fruit, yoghurts, snacks, polony, hotdogs, sausage rolls, margarine, spreads and bread are also welcome.
“Before 28 February, our sponsors and donors can receive up to 45% of their donation back from Sars as part of their allowable tax benefits for the 2025 tax year.”
Sars allows individuals, trusts, private and public companies to donate to charities registered as a Public Benefit Organisations (PBO).
Walk in Faith is a registered PBO under Section 18A, which provides tax exemption benefits to donors.
