Another load of recreational rubbish in Richards Bay
Residents raise concerns over excessive noise, littering at Lake Sontwayo in Meerensee

Yet another disappointed resident has voiced concerns about the lack of anti-littering action at public recreational venues.
This time the focus is on Lake Sontwayo, the ‘Black Bass Pool’, located behind Marlin Mall in Meerensee and overlooked by a number of residential complexes.
“This has always been a serene environment for residents, and a sanctuary for birdlife and occasional wildlife.
“However, in recent times this gem has been turned into a hotspot for disruptive and unlawful activities, which I strongly believe stems from lax municipal oversight,” said complainant Gian Ferraris.
“After Naval Island was lost as a prime recreational space for residents and, more recently, Pelican Island was closed due to misuse by certain irresponsible individuals, Lake Sontwayo has now become the go-to party location.
“Every weekend, we endure the deafening roar of quad bikes and off-road motorcycles racing up and down with no regard for the residents of these complexes.
“Public gatherings often result in excessive littering, with visitors shamelessly discarding trash – including fast food containers, liquor bottles and other waste – right outside our fences.
“Worse still, some individuals have displayed complete disregard for basic hygiene and respect, openly urinating and even defecating in the area.
“The blaring music from vehicles with open doors further adds to the distress of residents who simply want to enjoy the peaceful environment they once had.”
Ferraris claims he has reported the matter multiple times, without any action being taken.
What makes him more upset is that he recently hosted a fishing competition at the lake and went through significant red tape to obtain permission.
“I was required to comply with a litany of regulations, attend a Section 4 meeting, and ensure refuse bins
were supplied and all waste was removed within 24 hours.
“Yet, the very same rules and standards do not seem to apply to the people who trash the lake every weekend without any repercussions.
“I’m hoping media exposure will lead to positive action.”
