Suspects accused of several robberies in Ngwelezane were nabbed with expensive cell phones and other valuables

Two suspects accused of several armed robberies in Ngwelezane, uMhlanga and other areas have been arrested.

The duo are accused of robbing people of their expensive cell phones, cash and other valuables.

According to King Cetshwayo Cluster spokesperson, Captain Siyanda Shangase, a team of detectives investigated these cases.

“The team made a breakthrough after following some leads on Sunday at about 10pm near Phesheya Sports, as their movement was being monitored. They were caught with several expensive cell phones, a firearm and a knife.

“These suspects used to operate at night and in the early morning, targeting people going to and from work. In the week of their arrest, they had committed five armed robberies in these areas,” he said.

Shangase added that the police preliminary investigation indicates they were selling the phones to a Mozambicans who would get them unblocked them before selling them to other foreign nationals.

“It is also suspected that some of these phones were exported to Mozambique. Our investigation team is working around the clock to bring these perpetrators to book,” Shangase said, add that the duo was charged with possession of stolen property, illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a dangerous weapon, and armed robberies.

They appeared at the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Monday and were remanded in police custody pending further investigation. They will appear next Tuesday for a formal bail application.
