Anti-poaching patrollers net success at Richards Bay harbour

Poacher's boat and masses of gill nets seized during patrol at Richards Bay Harbour

Swift reaction on Thursday night put a temporary dent in poaching activity at the Casuarinas section of the Richards Bay harbour.

Marine honorary officers, members of the Anti-poaching Reaction Unit (APRU) affiliated to DFFE (Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment) were on patrol when they came across a poacher’s boat and masses of gill nets used to illegally and indiscriminately decimate fish populations.

While the poachers managed to escape, about 1.6km of ‘wall of death’ nets were removed, with 42 line fish entrapped.

A number of live fish were returned to the water.

Any person who can assist in combatting poaching is asked to call 082 5584275.
