Drown victim’s body recovered, search continues for 15-year-old girl

One drown victim has been recovered while the search continues for a second victim swept away by the Mhlathuze River

Almost one week after being swept away in the swollen Mhlathuze River, the body of a 19-year-old drown victim was recovered over the weekend.

The young man drowned while attempting to cross the river on Tuesday last week.

The extensive search and rescue operation, which was marred by harsh weather conditions and rising river levels owing to persistent rain, and made more difficult by the presence of crocodiles, resulted in the recovery of the body on Sunday.

Drone and helicopter searches were carried out, as well as diving, rafting and shoreline searches by SAPS Search & Rescue divers assisted by uMhlathuze Fire & Rescue.

The body of a 15-year-old girl, who went missing on Monday, 17 March just 5km from where the 19-year-old was swept away, is still missing.
