WATCH: N2 motorists drive contraflow during morning rush hour

Truck accident unleashes chaos on N2 near Empangeni, leads to reckless driver behaviour

An overturned truck blocking both lanes of the N2 northbound carriageway early this morning (Tuesday) unleashed mayhem on the road, not least of which was some motorists driving contraflow in peak hour.

The truck accident had taken place earlier in the morning between the Engen garage and the R34/John Ross off-ramp on the northbound carriageway, a short distance north of the petrol station.

As is evidenced in the video footage below, traffic was heavily backed up leading up to the accident scene.

“But rather than ducking off the N2 at the garage and driving underneath the freeway to get safely to the other side to head back to the off-ramp and use the R102, some motorists were turning around on the N2 and driving back in the wrong direction!” said Dirk Liebenberg, whose dashcam captured the chaos.

“They weren’t driving slowly either; they were moving it in the fast lane.”

An earlier post on a WhatsApp traffic group stated that a truck had done the same thing.

While there were no reports of any accidents as a result of motorists driving contraflow, the rain, poor visibility conditions and the fact that it was early in the morning on a dull day made this reckless driver behaviour all the worse and could have easily have led to tragedy.
