Probe into KZN doctor’s death

Full-scale investigation launched after death of medical intern at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital

South Africa’s Health Ombud, Professor Taole Mokoena, has launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Dr Alulutho Mazwi.

Dr Mazwi was a medical intern at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in Durban.

The Health Ombud was approached by Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi to institute the probe.

“This investigation aims to provide clarity and closure for those affected, helping them understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” said Professor Mokoena, referring to the young intern’s death while on duty at the hospital.

Mokoena said the investigation would focus on:

• Ascertaining the events leading to Dr Mazwi’s death

• Evaluating the working conditions and support systems for medical interns

• Identifying any systemic issues or lapses in protocol that may have contributed

• Providing recommendations to prevent similar occurrences in the future
