Weekend carnage on region’s roads
Emergency services responded to several accidents, some of which were fatal, on the region's roads at the weekend
Emergency personnel were hard at work over the weekend until the early hours of Monday morning, responding to various accidents, some of which were fatal.
On Friday, a head-on collision at Canefields on the N2 near Empangeni claimed one life as a woman sadly succumbed to critical injuries before emergency services arrived on scene.

On Saturday, a single vehicle veered down an embankment near Bizola Bridge on the John Ross, between Alton and Mondi. One occupant was entrapped.
That same day, a serious motor vehicle accident occurred on the R34 John Ross Highway near Empangeni when a driver lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn and lodge in a tree.
Emergency services, including KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service and uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue, responded immediately to the scene where they found the driver trapped inside with serious injuries.
Specialised rescue equipment had to be used as emergency personnel successfully extricated the patient from the wreckage, transporting him to a nearby hospital for further medical care.
Meanwhile, on Sunday evening, one person was killed and another sustained serious injuries when four vehicles collided on the N2 north of the eNseleni turn-off on the northbound carriageway.
But, sadly, the carnage was not over as emergency services were called during Monday morning rush-hour when a driver lost control on the John Ross in the vicinity of the banana sellers.
The vehicle had reportedly veered from the Richards Bay-bound carriageway over the centre median to the Empangeni-bound side, where it came to a halt on its roof.
One woman sustained serious injuries.
