8 fun and creative ways to keep kids entertained and learning at home
Discover simple yet engaging boredom-busting activities for kids that spark creativity and keep them busy indoors.

‘I’m bored!’. The two words you don’t want to hear from your children on weekends or during school holidays.
You’ve got a million things going on – laundry, dishes, maybe a work deadline, and trying to remember where you left your keys. Then there’s the tiny humans who need constant attention, especially when they’re bored. It’s a recipe for a mom meltdown.
Keeping kids busy at home is not just about keeping them entertained, it’s about creating those little pockets of time where you can actually breathe, get things done, or even just have a moment to yourself with some effective boredom-busters.
But it’s not about just plopping them in front of the TV, it’s about finding fun and engaging activities that both keep them busy and spark their creativity. And that’s where these little clever ideas come in:
1. Give them sensory toys
Fill a bin with dry beans, rice, pasta, or other textured materials. Add scoops, cups and toys for a sensory exploration adventure. They’ll be mesmerised for ages.
2. Overnight indoor camp
Gather blankets, pillows, a tent and anything else you can find to create a comfortable indoor camping space. Add some twinkle lights and fairy lights, and give them snacks like popcorn to make it extra special.
3. Art time
Gather some paper, crayons, markers, paints and various craft supplies to unleash your kids’ artistic creativity through different arts and crafts activities. It’s a magical way for kids to express themselves, explore their creative side, and have lots of fun.
4. Fun learning
Building blocks and magnetic tiles are absolute winners for keeping kids engaged and learning. Prepare a designated building area in your home, whether it’s a table, corner, or even just a large rug.
5. Dressing up
Dig out some old clothes, hats, scarves and accessories for a dress-up extravaganza. Let your kids express their creativity and have fun pretending to be different characters. Consider using pipe cleaners to create unique costume pieces and add an extra touch of imagination to their outfits.
6. Treasure hunt adventure
The idea of a treasure hunt can be a thrilling adventure for kids. Hide toys, treats, or special objects around the house and let your kids go on a treasure hunt. You can make it even more fun by creating a map or clues.
7. Spa at home (relax together)
Set up a quiet space. Round up all your favourite spa products, like bath bombs, face masks, lotions, and anything else you want to use. Encourage your kids to play, relax and unwind, and let them experience a relaxing DIY spa for kids too.
Face mask fun: Pick out some fun face masks, like cucumber or avocado masks, and apply them together. Let the kids choose their own face masks and put them on, making it a playful activity.
8. Make homemade modelling dough
Making homemade modelling dough is a fantastic way to keep your kids entertained and spark their creativity. With just a few simple ingredients, you can whip up a variety of doughs that will keep little hands busy for hours. Plus, it’s a great way to use up some of those recycled materials you have lying around!
Creative dough recipes and tips for moms
Classic flour dough: Mix together 2 cups of flour, 1/2 cup of warm water, 1/4 cup of salt, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Add food colouring to create different colours and let the fun begin!
Cloud dough: For a softer, fluffier option, mix 2 cups of flour with 1 cup of baby oil. Add a sprinkle of glitter or a few drops of essential oils for an extra sensory experience.
Gluten-free dough: If your child has gluten sensitivities, mix 2 cups of gluten-free flour, 1/2 cup of warm water, and 1/4 cup of salt. Adding a bit of xanthan gum can give it a better texture.
