Damaging waves, strong winds to cause disruption along KZN coast

Weather service issues warning of damaging waves that could impact small harbours and ports

Sailors, anglers and beachgoers are warned of damaging waves and strong winds along the KZN coast this (Wednesday) morning until tonight.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 1 warning for damaging waves and strong winds, resulting in localised disruption of small harbours or port for a short period.

“Small vessels at risk of taking on water and capsizing in a locality are expected between Oyster Bay and Richards Bay,” said the SAWS.

“A ridging high pressure system is dominating along the KZN coast.

“As a result, waves along the KZN coast between Port Edward and Cape St Lucia are expected to be between 4m and 5m, with a wave period of 12-13s, subsiding in the evening.”

A warning of damaging winds is also in place, and could cause difficulty in navigation at sea between Port Edward and Kosi Bay.

“The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to south-westerly, but strong south of Durban, spreading to Richards Bay by late afternoon.”
