KZN marks International Children’s Day with calls to end violence against children

Social Development MEC highlights child protection and ending violence against children in KZN

KZN Social Development MEC Mbali Shinga commemorated International Children’s Day on Sunday with the Ezingolweni community at the AB Gigaba community hall.

Observed annually, International Children’s Day coincides with South Africa’s Child Protection Month, which this year carries the theme: Working together in ending violence against children.

Shinga led the day’s events in Ugu District, joined by representatives from Santaco (the South African National Taxi Council), government departments, and civil society organisations that provide child protection services. She said the primary goal of the campaign was to ensure every child in South Africa has access to healthcare, education and safety.

“It is a time to honour childhood delights and emphasise the value of nurturing and protecting children, which will ultimately put an end to violence against children in our communities,” said Shinga.

She encouraged children to believe in their own potential and to actively work against the harmful social influences in their communities. Shinga also called on all community members to take responsibility for protecting vulnerable children and to play a role in ending violence.

“We have it in our hands to end violence against children,” she said.
