The Day of the Seafarer will be celebrated ocean-wide on 25 June – and you can help make this day special for the seafarers who will be in the Port of Richards Bay on the day.

The local branch of the Mission to Seafarers (MtS) has, as in the past, initiated a project that will give tangible taste to the appreciation we accord those men and women who sail the seas to load and deliver products that enter our factories and households.

Order and pay for a pizza/s at your favourite pizza place, tell them it’s for MtS and we will bulk collect for taking to ships in the harbour. It’s that easy to make their day!

Add some cold drinks to the bill to make it even better: and you can even make a cash donation (see below). Sponsored pizzas will be collected at the pizza outlets between 4-5pm on Friday, 24 June.

“The Day of the Seafarer was established by the International Maritime Organisation in a resolution adopted in 2010,” said MtS Chaplain Mark Classen.

“Its stated purpose being to recognise the unique contribution made by seafarers from all over the world to international seaborne trade, the world economy, and civil society as a whole.

“The resolution encourages governments, shipping organisations, companies, ship owners and all other parties concerned to duly and appropriately promote the Day of the Seafarer and take action to celebrate it meaningfully.

“This year, the campaign theme is ‘My Harassment-Free Ship’, which is a bold initiative to promote a culture of respect and zero tolerance for bullying and harassment at sea.”
