10 years for corrupt municipal official
Commercial crimes court sentences municipal official for corruption
Nhlakanipho Dlamini (45) was sentenced to 10 years by the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court after being convicted on two counts of corruption.
This was related to procuring of tenders, and corrupt activities relating to public officials between November 2019 and January 2020 while employed at Msunduzi Municipality as an acting fleet control adviser.
According to reports, a company named EWCop was contracted to supply and maintain vehicle tracking devices for municipal vehicles.
In 2018, EWCop’s contract with the municipality ended and was subsequently extended on a month-to-month basis, pending the outcome of the award for a new tender.
Dlamini approached EWCop and solicited their offer to secure the pending tender in their favour.
He further solicited R100 000 from the company to ensure the outstanding payments in respect of the month-to-month contract were paid to EWCop.
NPA KZN regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said a trap was set, and Dlamini was arrested upon receiving the ‘trap’ money.
“This evidence of the Section 252A trap and the related audio recordings formed part of the State’s case, presented by Adv Reenai Ramouthar. Dlamini was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment on each of the two counts of corruption,” she said.
She said six years from count 2 would run concurrently with the sentence in count 1, resulting in 10 years’ imprisonment.
