Pack, snack, go! Holiday padkos treats on the move

5 healthy, tasty holiday treats whether road-tripping or staying at home

The school holidays have arrived once more, and many families are preparing to go on holiday.

But even for those parents simply planning short trips or days out, keeping the children fed and watered sometimes requires out-the-box thinking.

If you want to try something different, or just need some tips to get you started, here are some ideas for healthy, tasty snacks your kids will love.

Peanut butter with celery dippers

Half fill a small sealable container with peanut butter and drop in some pre-cut celery sticks. This means the entire snack is concealed in one container, with much less risk of messing peanut butter all over the back seat of the car.

Rainbow fruit skewers

Select a variety of fruits you know your kids enjoy, cut them into pieces and place one piece of each fruit on the skewer, creating a healthy rainbow snack for the little ones.

Fruit yoghurt granola pots

Mix 200g oats, 2 tbsp honey and 1 tbsp sunflower oil in a baking tray. Spread out and bake at 200C for 7 minutes.

Stir, and bake for another 7 minutes and leave to cool.

Mix with 150g dried fruit (enough for 8 servings). For one serving, mix 100ml natural yoghurt with 1 tbsp sugar-free apricot (or another fruit) jam in a container.

Store granola in an airtight container and portion into a small bag when packing.

Date muffins (or other fruit of choice)

Buy a bag of vanilla muffin pre-mix from your local supermarket.

Buy dates, bananas, apples, or any fruit you wish to add.

Add eggs, water and milk/oil as instructed on the muffin mix bag.

Cut up the fruit (mash if using bananas) and add to the muffin mix.

Mix well, spoon into muffin baking tray and bake as directed on the muffin mix bag.

Fruits that work well: dates, apple & cinnamon, mashed banana, blueberries.

Pitta pizzas

Spread each pitta bread with 1 tbsp tomato purée, sprinkle mixed herbs over, then lay tomato slices.

Divide salami (or other cold meat of choice) among the pittas, sprinkle some grated cheese over and grill until the cheese is golden and bubbling
