uMhlathuze municipal workers’ strike: Negotiations to continue on Monday

Negotiations over the municipal workers’ strike, which commenced mid-June, have rolled over to Monday.

This after the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) met with the City of uMhlathuze today (Tuesday).

After their two-hour closed meeting, Samwu President Nelson Mokgotho held a press briefing highlighting that engagements between the city management and union are continuing.

“We had a meeting today. We have not concluded our engagement, and have moved it because there were areas where management still have to go and make the necessary consultations. We are meeting on Monday to conclude our discussion,” said Mokgotho at today’s media briefing.

“We cannot report on much now, but by Monday we will be able to give the outcome of the engagements.”

Mokgotho confirmed that representatives from Samwu national and provincial leadership, as well as from the Shonamalanga region and local shop stewards, were present at today’s discussions.

Grievances raised include safety and security pertaining to employees; PPE requirements not being met; unfair labour practices; filling of vacant positions, and overtime payments, which are still all under discussion.
