Remains of missing teen (15) found

Recovered remains believed to be that of Zamile Mpanza (15), who was swept away in a raging Mhlathuze River in March

A body believed to be that of a teenager who was washed away in strong water while attempting to cross an overflowing Mhlathuze River in March was found along the riverbank near Eniwe on Wednesday.

It is believed the remains belong to Zamile Mpanza (15) of the Bingoma area outside Empangeni, and were spotted by a herdsman, who alerted the authorities.

Mpanza and her friend were attempting to cross the river when they encountered difficulties, but her friend managed to get across.

Mapnza was a Grade 10 pupil at Mevamhlophe High School. While she was wearing her school uniform on the day of her disappearance, she was not attending school on that day.

Her family identified the remains as those of their missing daughter, based on the school uniform she was wearing when she went missing.

King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase said an inquest docket and a post-mortem examination will be conducted to confirm the identity.
