Protect your social grant cards, beneficiaries warned

Sassa welcomes arrest of suspect for fraud and illegal grant card loan scheme

Recipients of social grants are being warned to keep their Sassa and bank cards, as well as identity documents, safe following a recent incident of fraud.

A suspect was arrested in the Northern Cape onTuesday after she was found at an ATM with Sassa and bank cards, along with a substantial amount of cash.

It is reported that she was ‘unlawfully retaining the social grant cards of beneficiaries for loan repayments and withdrawing the cash from different accounts during payment cycles’.

She faces charges of fraud and contravention of the National Credit Act, and is expected to appear in court soon,” said Sassa Northern Cape’s acting regional executive manager Karabelo Mojanaga.

“We strongly welcome the arrest, and trust it will send a strong message that fraud and exploitation of our beneficiaries will not be tolerated.

“The illegal retention of social grant cards and identity documents by unscrupulous moneylenders is not only a criminal offence, but also morally reprehensible.”
