Hippos find new home behind shopping mall

Richards Bay residents urged to behave responsibly as hippos take up residence in suburban dam

A pair of hippos often seen wandering around Meerensee has been joined by a third, a juvenile.

They seem to have found a home for themselves in the Black Bass Dam behind Marlin Mall, and while they are exciting to see, a number of youths have been seen throwing objects and taunting them.

And baby makes three

These creatures are extremely dangerous, especially when grazing on land at night.

They are also not easily seen on the roads, so residents should take care.

Trouble times three if their territory and presence are not respected

Maybe the heavyweights are trying to find the home of Josh ‘Red Beast’ Pretorius, which is in the general area, to lay down a challenge?
