Man tortured in ‘vigilante’ attack

Man lays criminal charges after brutal attack in Pongola

A 36-year-old man was hospitalised for three weeks after reportedly being brutally assaulted with sticks, iron rods, and a welding machine.

Sandile Ntshangase of KwaMabophe area has laid criminal charges at Pongola SAPS against the perpetrators.

It is alleged that on the day of the incident, Ntshangase was attending a traditional ceremony with his neighbour.

“While he was there, he was approached by one of the suspects, who informed him that someone, who is known to the victim, wanted to talk to him privately,” said Zululand Cluster police spokesperson Captain Nkosie Gwala.

“They left the ceremony and went to the suspect’s house, accompanied by four others. Ntshangase and the men were ordered to go inside.”

Gwala said the suspect accused Ntshangase of stealing his cellphone, which he denied.

“The suspect and his four friends started assaulting [Ntshangase] and went so far as to plug in a welding machine and choke him.

“He was released, went home and his family rushed him to Itshelejuba Hospital for medical attention.”
