High fire danger warning for KZN

SA Weather Service issues fire danger warning for parts of KZN today (Monday)

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of extremely high fire danger conditions in northern and extreme western parts of KZN today (Monday).

The areas affected include Big Five Hlabisa, Nongoma, Jozini, Hluhluwe, Ulundi, uMhlabuyalingana, Mthonjaneni, Pongola and Nkandla.

“Dry, warm and windy conditions with wind gusts of greater than 60km/h are expected over the northern parts as well as the extreme western parts of KZN,” SAWS stated.

The Fire Danger Index is above 75 over the affected areas, which is favourable for development and the spread of fires.

KZN Cogta has urged residents to remain on high alert and to report large fires immediately.

“To stay safe, avoid making open fires or leaving them unattended, do not discard cigarette butts or bottles in the veld, and maintain controlled fire breaks,” advised Cogta.
