Fire danger: Veld fire warning for Zululand region

SA Weather Service warns of warm, dry, windy conditions favourable for development, rapid spread of fires

Zululanders are urged to take caution in today’s (Friday) dry weather conditions, and be sure not to unwittingly start any fires.

This as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) yesterday issued its second fire warning of the week.

The warning is in place from 7am to 6pm today, with parts of the Zululand region to be affected including Hlabisa, Jozini, Nkandla, Nongoma, Ulundi, uMvoti and Pongola.

With the Fire Danger Index (FDI) above 75, and dry, warm and windy conditions gusting more than 60km/h over northern KZN, fire danger conditions are extremely high, and favourable for development and rapid spread of fires.

Potential impacts

• Reduced visibility
• Damage to property
• Damage to vegetation
• Loss of human and/or animal life
