Vandalism causes widespread power outage in uMhlathuze

Local communities left without electricity after vandalism of substation in Empangeni

THEFT and vandalism at Zircon substation in Empangeni left residents in Mandlankala, Gobandlovu, Mpembeni, Mabuyeni and eSikhawini in the dark from yesterday.

“Eskom teams are working tirelessly to restore supplies to customers as quickly as possible. We urge our customers to please be patient while the recovery process is in progress,” said Eskom’s centralist cluster industry support and stakeholder management, Joyce Zingoni.

She added that technicians have assessed the damages and are in the process of testing and replacing the damaged equipment and cables, which is expected to take some time due to the nature of the damage.

Eskom security and local law enforcement authorities are investigating the incident, and Joyce encourages the community to assist with any information.

“We thank our customers for their continued patience and will provide updates as soon as further information on the restoration of supply becomes available.”
