Hot, dry weather conditions reaching over 32° expected across the Zululand region
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a veld fire warning for today (Friday), predicted to affect northern KZN, among other parts of South Africa.
The warning is valid until 6pm.
This amid hot, dry weather conditions reaching over 32° across the Zululand region, including uMlalazi, eShowe, Mandeni, uMfolozi, uMhlathuze, Richards Bay, Mtubatuba, Hluhluwe, Big 5 Hlabisa, Jozini, Melmoth, Nkandla, Nongoma, Ulundi, KwaMbonambi, uMhlabuyalingana and Pongola.
Possible impacts include reduced visibility, damage to property and vegetation, and in extreme cases, loss of human or animal life.
Residents are advised not to make fires in open areas or to leave fires unattended.
Additional precautions include:
• Not throwing cigarette butts out of cars into open velds
• Not throwing bottles in the open veld, as they can magnify the sun’s rays and start fires
• Reporting large fires immediately and allowing professionals to deal with the matter
